Like many JetBlue Scholars, Elsy found success in her career without having a degree. She had a rewarding career in the airline industry before retiring. Then, JetBlue started service to her native Port-au-Prince, Haiti (PAP), and Elsy came out of retirement to lead JetBlue’s operation at PAP.

It means a lot to me to actually get a degree, especially from the US. It is something I have wanted since I was 19.

When she heard about JetBlue Scholars, she jumped at the chance—but not because she needs a degree.

“At my age, I don’t need a degree for my job. However, I really just want it for myself and for my family. I have two children at college in the US now, and I thought it would be wonderful to join them in the college experience. It means a lot to me to actually get a degree, especially from the US. It is something I have wanted since I was 19.”

Elsy is excited to be working toward her Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from Thomas Edison State University (TESU), and says that the flexibility of taking classes online helps her balance working full-time with her studies.

“I really enjoyed English 101 on the Sophia platform,” says Elsy. “There were three different instructors who had videos for each lesson, and it helped me understand the concepts to see and hear a topic taught different ways. English is not my first language, so this was a good first course for me. There are writing assignments that I had to turn in, and the instructors did a good job of grading them.

Elsy speaks four languages and language testing through JetBlue Scholars has already helped her earn 35 credits toward her degree, and she is still going!

Like all Crewmembers in the JetBlue Scholars program, Elsy is working toward her degree with JetBlue covering the cost until she is ready to transfer her credits to TESU. There, she will take her final course online directly through TESU for less than $3,500 in tuition and graduation fees. She may even be eligible for scholarships which will cover the full cost of the degree.
